November 4, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Detroit Fury News Release

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -The Detroit Fury of the Arena Football League named Tom Luginbill the new head coach for the 2004 season. Luginbill will take over the head coaching duties from his father Al Luginbill, who served as head coach of the Fury in 2003. Al Luginbill, in his new position, will take on the football operations responsibilities. He will remain a member of the coaching staff, but in a lesser role, coaching the special teams and defensive backs for the Fury.

"This is not a major change for the Fury," said Palace Sports & Entertainment President Tom Wilson. "Tom has been handling many of the responsibilities of the head coach, and he will now have the formal title. As for Al, he loves to coach and will continue to do so, but now he will also be working hard to make sure this team is a success off the field."

Tom Luginbill brings a wealth of knowledge to his new position and a reputation for building football franchises. Luginbill led the 2000 Tennessee Valley Vipers of af2 to the championship game in his first year as a head coach. Tom was the quarterback coach with the 2001 Los Angeles Xtreme of the XFL and helped lead the Xtreme to the league's one and only championship. Luginbill was the offensive coordinator with the 2002 expansion Dallas Desperados of the AFL, where he helped lead the Desperados to the second round of the playoffs. In 2003, Tom was instrumental in rebuilding the Fury. The Fury tied the AFL record for the best single-season turnaround (from 1-13 to 8-8) and won the franchise's first-ever playoff game. Luginbill will maintain his current role as the team's director of player personnel.

The Fury will return for their fourth season of Arena Football League action at The Palace of Auburn Hills on February 5, 2004. Season tickets for the Fury can be purchased by calling (248) 377-0100, and additional information can be found at www.detroitfury.com.
