San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2006) - With the first weekend of training camp coming to a close, the two-time ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats continued to adjust their roster for the upcoming season.
With AFL rookie and former Stanford Cardinal Chris Lewis as the only backup on the roster to All-League QB Mark Grieb, the SaberCats were in search of a veteran insurance policy. They found one.
Stoney Case, a six-year NFL veteran who spent the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Storm, signed a free agent deal with the San Jose and has started practicing with the team.
"Stoney knows the quarterback position," stated SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet. "This also allows us to develop Chris without putting unnecessary pressure on him."
A third-round pick (80th overall) by the Arizona Cardinals in the 1995 NFL Draft, Case also spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions playing in 24 games during his NFL career. His most productive campaign came in 1999 with Baltimore when he threw for 988 yards and three touchdowns while starting seven of the 10 games he played in.
The club also announced the signing of former USC defensive back Kevin Arbet, who is also the nephew of the team's head coach.
Arbet (5-11, 200) was a member of two National Championship teams with the Trojans and started 14 of his 47 career games posting 100 tackles, two sacks and five interceptions. He missed the entire 2002 season and was granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA.
He attended training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005.
GEATHERS RETURNS
After being placed on non-claimable waivers on December 30, Jason Geathers is back in camp. The SaberCats signed Geathers back to the camp roster after the former University of Miami Hurricane had workouts with several NFL clubs.
