San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Feb. 26, 2007) - A pair of trades highlighted a flurry of activity as the two-time ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats reduced their roster size to 23, one below the Arena Football League limit, in preparation for the 2007 season opener next week in Los Angeles, general manager and head coach Darren Arbet announced today.
In exchange for future considerations, the SaberCats traded defensive back Rufus Brown to the New York Dragons and lineman Kyle Rasmussen to the Grand Rapids Rampage.
The club waived linemen Tyler Moore, Chris Solomona, Barrett Allen and Ron Warner, LB Daniel Garay, DB Reynard Carrie and WR Rufus Skillern. Receiver Burl Toler was released-exempt after agreeing to attend a tryout with the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe.
Eight players were placed on injured reserve, including QB Scott Rislov (ankle), WR Cleannord Saintil (hip flexor), DB Brandon Smith (wrist), FB Shawn Willis (ankle), and linemen William Obeng (shoulder), Jeff Littlejohn (bicep), Tim Martin (sternum) and Troy Reddick (knee).
In addition the SaberCats signed 11-year AFL veteran lineman Chuck Reed and activated FB Matt Kinsinger from injured reserve. Both players have been placed on the team's active roster.
The SaberCats open their 13th season in the AFL next Sunday at Western Division rival Los Angeles with a 7:00 p.m. showdown at Staples Center. A premier franchise in the AFL, San Jose has captured two ArenaBowl titles, six Western Division championships, seven consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade.
