San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 16, 2007) - The 2007 ArenaBowl Champion San Jose SaberCats re-signed several key members of their title team prior to Wednesday's Arena Football League deadline for clubs to sign their own potential free agents.
Defensive lineman Alan Harper, defensive back Marquis Floyd and offensive linemen William Obeng and Julius Gant all agreed to contract terms before the deadline. All unsigned players are now available for free agency.
"Signing these players was a top priority for us," stated head coach and general manager Darren Arbet.
The signings of Floyd, Obeng and Gant mean the SaberCats will have their entire defensive secondary and offensive line intact for the 2008 season.
Floyd (6-2, 192, West Georgia) tallied six interceptions, 16 pass breakups and 56.0 tackles during the regular season and teamed with Omarr Smith and Clevan Thomas as starting DBs in all 19 games during the year.
A former San Jose State star, Obeng (6-7, 335) joined the club's active roster midway through the season and emerged as a starter in the regular season finale and in all three playoff victories.
Gant (6-4, 314, Middle Tennessee St.) played in every game on the offensive line making nine starts. The second year player also scored a pair of touchdowns this season on a 1-yard reception and a 10-yard return of an attempted onside kick.
Harper (6-2, 291, Fresno State) started all 10 regular season games he played missing six with a foot injury and was a force on the defensive line during the postseason. Harper totaled 21.0 tackles with 3.0 sacks and 6.0 tackles for loss during the regular year.
"We still have a few holes to fill (on the roster), but we're excited about bringing this group of players back to defend our title next season," said Arbet.
The SaberCats captured their third ArenaBowl title in six seasons by defeating Columbus, 55-33, in New Orleans on July 29.
A premier franchise in the AFL, the SaberCats have captured three ArenaBowl titles, seven Western Division championships, eight consecutive playoff appearances and own the league's best regular season record this decade.
