San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2006) - After completing a four-year career at San Jose State University, TRESTIN GEORGE will be close to home after joining the two-time ArenaBowl Champion San Jose SaberCats in a two-year deal, the club announced today.
George (5-9, 180) entered his collegiate career as a highly recruited running back (23rd in nation) out of St. Mary's High School in Berkeley. The Spartan coaching staff felt that George's talents would best be utilized on the defensive side of the field so he made the switch after his freshman season.
The Berkeley native registered 148 tackles, five interceptions, and two touchdowns in three years as a defensive back. George also amassed more than 1,100 kickoff/punt return yards with three scores over the same time period as a return specialist.
"We're hoping for Trestin to come in and provide a spark to our defense," SaberCats head coach Darren Arbet said. "He is a very skilled athlete in many facets and we may look to work him into some return roles as well."
George is also one of only two players in Spartan history to have recorded a touchdown five different ways (rushing, receiving, interception return, kickoff return, punt return). The Sporting News named George to the "All-Freshman Team" in the Western Athletic Conference in 2002.
In four years at St. Mary's High, George rushed for 3,809 yards and 60 touchdowns. He was also a member of the track team where he participated in the triple and long jump events.
George signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006. He appeared in three preseason games in 2006 and accounted for one tackle, two pass deflections, and two kickoff returns for 56 yards.
A premier franchise in the AFL, San Jose has captured two ArenaBowl titles, six Western Division championships, seven consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade.
