San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2007) - The defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats landed a really big fish from the free agent pool on Thursday re-signing defensive lineman George "Big Sexy" Williams to a one-year contract, the club announced.
"George was the unquestioned leader of our defensive squad last season," SaberCats head coach and general manager Darren Arbet stated. "Even being one of the elders on the team, he came out everyday and worked just as hard as anyone else. He is a great mentor to the younger players we have."
Williams (6-4, 314, North Carolina State), who has played each of his six AFL seasons with the SaberCats, will return to the team as a primary pass rusher on defense. Logging time in every game in 2007, Williams registered 15.0 tackles with 3.0 sacks and also tacked on 10 pass breakups.
"I'm happy to be back with the SaberCats," Williams expressed. "When I decide to end my professional career, I hope to be in the green and gold."
Known as a big guy with soft hands, Williams played little but contributed heavily on the offensive side of the ball. He hauled in a total of five passes on the season with every one going for a touchdown.
"I've said it for awhile now and I'll say it again, I've got the best hands in this league," Williams declared with a smile. "I'm aiming to break (Mike) Vrabel's record for most TD receptions by a defensive player."
Williams joins FB/LB Frank Carter as free agents to sign with the three-time ArenaBowl champions since the signing period began on Monday.
A premier franchise in the AFL, the San Jose SaberCats have captured three ArenaBowl titles, seven Western Division championships, eight consecutive playoff appearances and own the league's best regular season record this decade.
