San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (August 22, 2007) - The 2007 ArenaBowl Champion San Jose SaberCats were honored by Mayor Chuck Reed at the City Council meeting on Tuesday afternoon at San Jose City Hall.
The SaberCats won their third Arena Football League title by defeating the Columbus Destroyers, 55-33, in ArenaBowl XXI on July 29 in New Orleans.
"This is the third championship for the SaberCats in just six years," exclaimed Mayor Reed during the presentation. "They're often referred to as the greatest Arena Football organization in the past decade and the only problem for them is that our expectations as a city keep getting higher. Regardless, San Jose is thrilled to have a successful and exciting professional football team."
A majority of the front office staff, including team vice president Hank Stern, were in attendance for the commendation ceremony that preceded the council meeting.
"Representing the city of San Jose in New Orleans on July 29 was a tremendous feeling. We came off the field with a championship and brought it back to San Jose. There is pressure for us to do it again and we're going to do everything we can to bring it back next season," said Stern.
Part of that process will be to sign as many players on the championship roster as possible for 2008. Marquis Floyd, Alan Harper, William Obeng and Julius Gant all agreed to contract terms last week before the free agency deadline.
A premier franchise in the AFL, the San Jose SaberCats have captured three ArenaBowl titles, seven Western Division championships, eight consecutive playoff appearances and own the league's best regular season record this decade.
