CORPUS CHRISTI -- Corpus Christi Hooks founder and Ryan-Sanders Baseball CEO Reid Ryan speaks to Corpus Christi Rotarians during the noon hour Thursday as the Hooks and Rotary Club continue their planning of a Miracle League field in Corpus Christi.

Ryan's address is in conjunction with a Rotary luncheon at the Holiday Inn-Emerald Beach, which begins at 11:45.

The Hooks and Rotary Club of Corpus Christi-Evening partnered last winter to raise awareness and funds for the construction of a Miracle League facility. The site is on Airport Road between Old Brownsville Road and Greenwood Drive, across from Gabe Lozano, Sr. Golf Course.

Proceeds from the Hooks Winter Baseball Banquet in January and February's Astros Caravan Luncheon provided project start-up money. H-E-B has also donated to the cause.

The first Miracle League was formed in 1998 by Georgia's Rockdale (County) Youth Baseball Association. Its mission was to provide opportunities for all children to play baseball regardless of ability. Rotarians in Rockdale County and Conyers were instrumental in funding the effort.

Miracle League facilities include a custom-designed field with cushioned rubberized turf to help prevent injuries, wheelchair accessible dugouts and a completely flat surface to eliminate barriers for wheelchair-bound or physically impaired players. Today, there are 150 Miracle League organizations nationally, including one in Austin which benefited from support by the Hooks' sister club, the Round Rock Express.

"The Miracle League is one of those special things that come along and you just have to become a part of," Ryan said. "Every kid should have a chance to experience the joy of playing baseball and wearing a uniform of their own.

"Corpus Christi and South Texas have been very good to the Hooks and my family. We are excited about giving back to the community of baseball and getting people interested in this great project."
