SAN JOSE – San Jose Stealth forward Ryan Boyle was chosen as the National Lacrosse League's Edge Advanced Rookie of the Year for the 2005 season. The award was voted on by the Governors, General Managers, and Head Coaches of the league's ten member clubs.

Selected as the third overall pick in the 2004 NLL Entry Draft, Boyle captured the award after leading all NLL rookies in points (64), goals (22), assists (42) and loose balls (95).

"I can't tell you how ecstatic I am about winning this award," said Boyle. "It's unfortunate that the team did not do better than we did, but coming in not knowing what to expect and knowing that I contributed feels good."

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Baltimore native received NLL Rookie of the Week honors on three different occasions and was named Rookie of the Month in January and March. Boyle became only the fourth rookie in league history to earn two Rookie of the Month Awards, joining the likes of John Grant Jr. (2000), Tracey Kelusky (2001) and Craig Conn (2004).

"The San Jose organization took a leap of faith by drafting me with such an early pick," added Boyle. "And I had to move across the country to play a sport that I've never played before (box lacrosse), so it's nice to see that both parties benefited. We have a great team and we are only going to get better."

This is the third Rookie of the Year award Boyle has earned playing lacrosse, as he won Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2001 at Princeton University, as well as the Major Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year last summer while playing for the Philadelphia Barrage.

By Boyle winning the Rookie of the Year award, it marks only the fourth time in the15 years it has been given that the award has been won by a U.S. player. Other U.S. winners include Charlie Lockwood (1995), Jessie Hubbard (1999) and Brian Langtry (2003).

"Besides Ryan's goals and assists, we were extremely pleased with his intensity, courage and toughness," said Stealth General Manager and Head Coach Johnny Mouradian. "As he continues to develope he will be a leader on the offensive side of the floor for our team. If you look at all the scoring leaders in the league this season, Ryan ranks fourth in loose balls. He is going to be a star of the future."

Boyle was the only rookie to be selected for the 2005 NLL All-Star Game, in which he notched an assist at Calgary. He ranked first on the Stealth in assists, and second in goals, points and loose balls.

In addition to winning the Rookie of the Year award, Boyle was also selected to the Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team. Joining Boyle on the team are Ryder Bateman (Minnesota), Delby Powless (Buffalo), Rory Glaves (Anaheim), Andrew Burkholder and Dan Finck (Philadelphia).
