Boyle named NLL Rookie of the Year

Ryan Boyle of the San Jose Stealth was named the Edge Advanced Rookie of the Year for the 2005 season and is the first member selected to the 2005 Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team. Delby Powless (Buffalo Bandits), Andrew Burkholder (Philadelphia Wings), Rory Glaves (Anaheim Storm), Ryder Bateman (Minnesota Swarm), and Dan Finck (Philadelphia Wings) were also elected to the Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team, the National Lacrosse League announced earlier today. Boyle received the highest number of votes for the award as voted on by the Head Coaches, Governors and General Managers of the league's ten member clubs, followed by Powless, Burkholder, Glaves, Bateman, and Finck. The voting for all annual awards took place after the conclusion of the regular season and ended before the start of the Champion's Cup Playoffs.

Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team

1.) Ryan Boyle, San Jose Stealth – Forward

Ryan Boyle of the San Jose Stealth was awarded 2005 Edge Advanced Rookie of the Year honors and was the first player selected to the 2005 Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team. During the season, the Stealth forward earned Rookie of the Week honors in Week #2 and Week #4 as well as Rookie of the Month honors in January and March. Boyle was the league's 21st overall points leader including a 13th best 42 assists in 2005. The Hunt Valley, Maryland native was the only rookie selected to play in the 2005 All-Star Game, and the 23 year old tallied an assist and scooped up a loose ball for the West Division All-Star team in the contest. Boyle was second on the Stealth in points (64) and goals (22) and lead the team in assists (42) in 2005. The rookie forward was also second on the team and 16th best in the league in loose balls with 95 and also netted two game winning goals this season. Boyle lead all rookies in points, goals, assists, and loose balls in 2005 and the Stealth finished with a 4-12 record.

2.) Delby Powless, Buffalo Bandits - Forward

Delby Powless was the second player elected to the 2005 Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team for his performance on the Buffalo Bandits offense this season. Powless was the team's fifth leading scorer this season totaling 20 goals and adding 24 assists for 44 points in 13 games played. The Bandits forward also collected 57 loose balls and scored two game-winning goals in 2005. The first overall pick in the 2004 NLL Entry Draft also earned Rookie of the Week honors in Week #5 and Week #14. The 24-year-old Six Nations, Ontario native played a big role alongside veteran John Tavares in helping lead the Bandits to an 11-5 record in 2005 and to a first round home playoff game. In the 19-14 opening round playoff loss to the Rochester Knighthawks, Powless scored a goal and added five assists for six points and collected two loose balls.

3.) Andrew Burkholder, Philadelphia Wings - Forward

Andrew Burkholder of the Philadelphia Wings was the third player voted to the 2005 Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team. Burkholder was a force on the Wings offense this season earning Rookie of the Month honors in February and Rookie of the Week honors three times (Week #8, 9, and 15). In eleven games played in 2005, Burkholder scored 17 goals and added 14 assists for 31 points and collected 83 loose balls. The 21-year-old St. Catharines, Ontario native also scored seven power play goals this season. The Wings finished the 2005 season 6-10.

4.) Rory Glaves, Anaheim Storm - Defenseman

Rory Glaves of the Anaheim Storm was the fourth player selected to the 2005 Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team. Glaves, the Week #13 Rookie of the Week, played solid defense all season and played a big role in leading the Storm to a 5-11 record, up from 1-15 in 2004. The 23-year-old Victoria, British Columbia native scooped up 32 loose balls, scored a goal, and added three assists, for four points in 15 games played for the Storm this season.

5.) Ryder Bateman, Minnesota Swarm - Forward

Ruder Bateman of the Minnesota Swarm was the fifth player chosen to the 2005 Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team. Bateman was Minnesota's fifth leading scorer with 39 points in 2005, including a team third best 20 goals, and a team fifth best 19 assists. Bateman also collected 56 loose balls and scored 11 power play goals in 14 games played. The 25 year old Calgary, Alberta native earned Rookie of the Week Honors in Week #7 and in Week #16. The Swarm finished 5-11 in their inaugural season.

6.) Dan Finck, Philadelphia Wings – Defenseman

Dan Finck of the Philadelphia Wings was the sixth and final member voted to the 2005 Edge Advanced All-Rookie Team. Finck, the Week #12 and Week #14 Rookie of the Week was fifth on the Wings in loose balls with 82 in 2005 and totaled 16 points on ten goals and six assists in 14 games played this season. The 24 year old Halifax, Nova Scotia native was a key member of the Wings defense this season helping lead the team to a 6-10 record.
