Rapid City Rush News Release

On behalf of the Rapid City Rush Hockey Club and the American Cancer Society, Coach Joe Ferras and Assistant General Manager Tim Hill will host the second "Hockey in Heels" Fundraiser Event. This event offers women an opportunity to learn the game of hockey from the basics of the equipment to the rules and regulations of the game while supporting local organizations like the American Cancer Society.

Nationally, more than 1.4 million Americans develop cancer each year. South Dakota sees nearly 4,000 new cases each year. In South Dakota alone, 19.3 people pass away each day, 4.3 of whom die from cancer - that's over 22 percent.

During this decade, the number of cancer cases nationwide is projected to increase 23 percent, from 1.3 million in 2000 to 1.6 million in 2010. This is due to our aging population, population growth, and an overall increase of cancer incidence rates of about 0.3 percent annually.

Cancer treatments are increasing in complexity and duration. And while cancer is still the second leading cause of death in our country, death rates are falling, with more than half of all cancer patients surviving five years or longer after diagnosis.

"This event gives us an opportunity to show our appreciation to the Rapid City community for their support by teaming up with great organizations like the American Cancer Society. It's also a fun evening for the ladies and most leave with a better understanding of the game," Ferras said.

"Hockey in Heels" will be held June 3 in the Alpine Room at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm; wine and hors d'oeuvres will be provided. Cost for the fundraiser is $25 and proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Space is limited, RSVP to the Rush office at 605.716.PUCK (7825) or email info@rapidcityrush.com.
