Edmonton, AB---- The Edmonton Rush announced today that the club has acquired defender Tyler Codron from the Washington Stealth in exchange for defender Ian Hawksbee.
Codron, in his fourth National Lacrosse League campaign, brings to the Rush a physical edge that they will need as the team vies for playoff positioning in the tight West Division.
"Tyler, just 24 years of age, plays with a lot of bite to his game and he plays an effective shut-down role. Both of those elements are going to be very beneficial to the Rush when we are facing teams that we are battling against for a playoff spot," said Rush GM/Head Coach Derek Keenan.
"There is a lot of sandpaper to Tyler's game. He plays the game tough, plays with grit, and he has good speed to be in the right position. Tyler is an excellent addition to the team as we make our way into the heart of the regular season and things start to get very intense."
Codron was a first-round pick of the Portland Lumberjax in the 2007 NLL Entry Draft, and started his pro career under Keenan with the Portland franchise. The six-foot, 205-pounder was picked up by Toronto in the NLL Dispersal Draft but then packaged off to Washington in a trade between the Rock and Stealth that sent Lewis Ratcliff to Washington and Colin Doyle back to Toronto.
In 41 career NLL regular-season games, Codron has managed eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points plus 167 loose balls. His best season was the '09 campaign when he totalled five goals and nine assists for 14 points along with 89 loose balls. With Washington this season, the 24-year-old Port Coquitlam, B.C., product had picked up nine loose balls and earned two forced turnovers.
Despite missing all but one regular-season game due to a knee injury, Codron was part of the 2010 Washington lineup that captured the Champion's Cup, knocking the Rush out of their first-ever playoff run in the West Division final. In two playoff games last season, Codron notched seven loose balls, and he has two assists and 28 loose balls in six career playoff appearances.
A former standout defensive back with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds football team, Codron plays his summer lacrosse with the WLA's Maple Ridge Burrards. In 12 games last season, Codron picked up one goal and three assists for four points.
Hawksbee, who had been acquired in 2008 by the Rush from the San Jose franchise before it moved to Washington, played 54 games with Edmonton and recorded three goals and 30 assists for 33 points in that time. In 2009, Hawksbee set a then-club record with 150 loose balls ¬" a record broken last season by Brodie Merrill. Through seven games this season, Hawksbee had recorded three assists and 38 loose balls.
The Rush prepare for another battle of Alberta this weekend against the Calgary Roughnecks. The provincial rival is currently with the Roughnecks ahead 2-0. The battle takes place Sunday, February 21 at 2:00 in Rexall Place.
