Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

RAPID CITY, SD - Les Reaney scored at 5:06 of overtime as the Rapid City Rush handed the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs their first loss of the playoffs by a final score of 5-4 Saturday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Rapid City now leads the Northern Conference Finals 1-0 after taking the opening game in the best-of-seven series.

Despite a hefty shot edge for the Rush throughout, the Mudbugs rallied from three separate one-goal deficits to tie the game and even take a 4-3 lead at one point. Clay Plume scored two goals for the ‘Bugs against his former team, while the other tallies came on the powerplay from Joe Ori and Simon Mangos. Ken Carroll stopped 39 shots in goal as four of the Rush's five goals came on rebounds.

Rapid City jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on the first shift of the series as Carroll stopped an initial shot only to have Derek LeBlanc stuff in the rebound only 28 seconds into the game. The ‘Bugs settled in and tied it at one with a powerplay goal as Chris St. Croix's dump-in hit a partition in the glass and kicked right to Joe Ori, who beat Danny Battochio high to the glove side at 8:35. Bossier-Shreveport killed off two Rush powerplays to cap the period and went to the locker room tied.

Rapid City outshot the Mudbugs 8-1 in the first half of the second period and took a 2-1 lead when Derek Campbell raced in on a breakaway and rifled a shot over Carroll's glove at 6:57. The ‘Bugs ended up with nine shots in the period, but couldn't beat Danny Battochio and trailed by one going into the third.

Plume tied it at two early in the third frame after a nice setup from Jeff Kyrzakos and Travis Clayton, but Scott Wray scored on a rebound just 18 seconds later to put the Rush back on top. The ‘Bugs then killed two off two more Rapid City powerplays - including a minute of 5-on-3 time - to stay within one.

Simon Mangos netted a powerplay goal off a Brett Smith centering feed at 8:44 to once again tie the game at three. Bossier-Shreveport took its first lead when Plume tallied for the second time in the game, burying a long shot through traffic to give the ‘Bugs a 4-3 advantage.

With just 3:37 remaining though, Wray broke down the right wing and put his own rebound past Carroll to knot the game at four. Carroll was shaken up on the play, but stayed in the game as the teams headed to overtime. Just over five minutes into the extra session, Brendan Cook was stopped in the slot by Carroll before Reaney backhanded the rebound into the net to give Rapid City the 5-4 win and 1-0 series lead.

Ken Carroll drops to 3-1 in the playoffs with the loss, while Danny Battochio improves to 5-0 after making 2-0 saves. The Rush outshot the Mudbugs 44-24 in the contest, but was scoreless on five powerplay chances. The ‘Bugs scored on 2 of their 4 powerplays.

The Mudbugs will now look to tie the series at one game apiece in Game 2 tomorrow evening at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Opening faceoff is set for 6:05 pm Central, with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL. The game will also be shown live online on CHL TV.
