Rush re-signs FB/LB Charlie Cook

Chicago Rush News Release

The Chicago Rush has re-signed FB/LB Charlie Cook to a two-year contract extension through the 2008 season, the team announced today. Cook, who has played in Chicago the last two seasons, would have become a free agent had he not come to terms with the team by today.

"Bringing Charlie back really helps solidify the FB/LB position," said Rush head coach Mike Hohensee. "With Bob McMillen still deciding whether or not he wants to retire, extending Charlie's contract was a priority for us and we are glad he wanted to return."

Cook played in nine games for the Rush during the 2006 regular season, rushing for a career-high 66 yards and three touchdowns, and catching five passes for 41 yards and two TDs. On defense, he recorded nine tackles, two sacks and three passes broken up.

Cook played in all four of the team's playoff games this season, recording 6.5 tackles and scoring one touchdown.

The signing of Cook means that 24 of the 29 players who finished the 2006 season with the Rush will be back to help the team defend its ArenaBowl title in 2007. The remaining five free agents are: FB/LB Bob McMillen, OL/DL John Sikora, OL/DL Darian Tate, DS Marvin Taylor and WR/LB Carlos Wright.

"Brian Schwartze has done a great job with our player personnel," said Hohensee. "We have the bulk of our team returning and we are in good shape from a salary cap standpoint. I think we have put ourselves in the best possible position heading into the 2007 season."

The Rush defeated the Orlando Predators 69-61 June 11 in Las Vegas to capture the ArenaBowl XX title. The win capped an amazing playoff run in which the underdog Rush won three consecutive road games on its way to the championship game.
