Rush Drop Close One To Eagles 3-1

January 8, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rapid City Rush News Release

(Rapid City, SD) - On Wednesday night, the Rapid City Rush hosted the Colorado Eagles for 3rd time in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena. The Rush were coming off their first overtime win against the Rocky Mountain Rage, but were unable to make it 4 out of their last 5 as they fell short to the Eagles with a score of 3-1.

Starting Rush goaltender, Miguel Beaudry, saw plenty of action during the first period, where he was fired at 17 times. Only once did Beaudry let a puck into his net, when at the 5:45 mark in the period, Eagle defenseman Scott Polaski found the back of the net. Polaski joined the Rush after blocking a shot in the Eagle end and then fired a shot top shelf on Beaudry as the goal was assisted by Riley Nelson and Kevin Ulanksi. The first period also saw ten penalty minutes, with eight of those going to the Rush, which included a double minor for high sticking on Gio Flamminio. The Rush sent in nine shots at Eagle goaltender, Andrew Penner, but weren't able to get a puck between the pipes, ending the period with an Eagle lead of 1-0.

The second period was a strong defensive showing for both squads, as no new points were put up on the board. Beaudry had another exceptional period, stopping all fifteen shots that came toward his net while the Rush were able to get off six shots against Penner. The Rush's home penalty kill continues to be strong as there were no powerplay goals allowed on the period's penalties. The Eagles continued to lead at the end of the 2nd by a score of 1-0.

The third period looked like it was going to be a repeat of the second, with both teams initially firing off a lot of shots, but putting no new points on the board until the 18:57 mark in the third period. With Beaudry pulled for the extra-attacker, the Eagles scored an empty-netter that came from Konrad Reeder, who was unassisted on the play. It looked as though that would seal the game until Rapid City was able to respond as Joey Olson found the back of the net at 19:04 in the period. The Eagles would then put the game away as Riley Nelson scored an empty net goal, sealing the victory with just 4 seconds left. Nelson was assisted by Ryan Tobler and Kevin Ulanksi on the second empty net goal for Colorado.

Neither team found the back of the net on the power play as Colorado went 0-for-7 while Rapid City was held scoreless on 4 powerplay chances. Final shots were 44-26 in favor of the Eagles. Rapid City will host a doubleheader against Wichita this weekend at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
