Abilene Ruff Riders News Release
ABILENE, TX: The Abilene Ruff Riders (1-1) look to rebound after a tough loss on Saturday, April 11 to the Omaha Beef, 52-46. The Ruff Riders looked poised to take out the Beef last Saturday but the Beef were able to come back strong in the end and clinch the victory. The Abilene offense started strong from the very beginning and led after one quarter, 20-10. Omaha would respond in the second quarter after Courtney Grixby returned a PAT for two points to cut the Abilene lead to eight.
The return by Grixby changed the momentum of the game as Omaha collected 12 unanswered points in the second quarter and Abilene went into halftime trailing 31-20. Abilene made adjustments in the second half as QB Quincy Carter found WR Mike Carrillo for an eight-yard touchdown pass, cutting the Omaha lead to four. Omaha tacked on one more score in the third quarter and led going into the fourth, 38-27.
Abilene battle back in the fourth quarter, but Omaha prevailed, 52-46. Quincy Carter finished 12-for-23 with 170 yards passing and five touchdown passes. WR Mike Carrillo registered with four receptions for 47 yards and three touchdowns. The Abilene defense had a productive evening but failed to stop Omaha on third down conversions throughout the course of the evening.
Abilene will now turn their attention towards the Corpus Christi Hammerheads. Corpus is coming off a 37-17 win over the El Paso Generals on Saturday, April 11. Newly acquired QB Michael Bishop led the Hammerheads with 149 yards passing and 31 yards rushing. The Hammerhead defense collected three interceptions and held the Generals without an offensive point until early fourth quarter.
Abilene will face a tough Hammerhead squad on the road after the big win over the Generals. The Ruff Riders defense will need to improve and make key stops on third down situations in order to stay in the game. The defense will have to account for QB Michael Bishop as well as WR Nathaniel Dunn. Look for Abilene's offense to put points on the board early as they did a week previously against Omaha. The Hammerhead secondary will have to account for WR Jarale Badon and WR Mike Carrillo. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. From the Central Pavilion in Robstown. Next week, the Ruff Riders will return home to face the San Angelo Stampede Express (2-0).
