Visalia Rawhide News Release
STOCKTON â A long bus ride that began at 5 a.m. for the Oaks probably seemed to continue until about 2 p.m. That's when the last out was made in Stockton's 16-5 thrashing of the Oaks Tuesday. The Ports opened their home stand with a 10:35 a.m. first pitch to accommodate students in the D.A.R.E. Program who gave the Ports their largest crowd of the season so far, 4,027.
Visalia starting pitcher Justin Hampson walked the first three batters he faced in the game, but escaped the first inning by allowing only one run. Stockton also scored a run each in the second and third, but crushed the Oaks with a 12-run fourth. Seventeen men batted for Stockton in the fourth inning. Hampson was charged with eight runs (seven earned) and left with a 6-0 deficit. Reliever Isaac Pavlik struggled uncharacteristically as Stockton blew the game open. Pavlik had allowed only three walks in fifteen inning coming into the game, on Tuesday faced six batters and failed to record an out. He walked five and gave up a two-run double to Rashad Eldridge.
After Pavlik was removed from the game, Nick came on and gave up a grand slam to the first batter he faced: Jason Bourgeios. The slammed capped the scoring in the inning even though it came with just one out and Stockton tallied two more hits before the third out was made and Ports led 15-0 through four.
Sean Barker hit his first home run of the fifth and Jayson Nix capped a four-run ninth for the Oaks with a three-run homer, his third.
Webb pitched 3.2 innings and allowed just two runs. Ryan Speier tossed a scoreless eighth for the Oaks and struck out two.
Stockton starter Sam Narron was literally knocked out of the game on a line drive off the bat Oaks catcher Dan Conway, which hit Narron in the face. Narron walked under his own power to the clubhouse located in centerfield and was replaced by Rich Gilbert. Gilbert came on following two singles that started the second inning and kept Visalia off the scoreboard in two full innings on the mound.
Gilbert picked up the win to improve to 3-0, while Jose Dominguez pitched the bulk of the game: four innings with one run allowed.
Not the Worst: Stockton beat the Oaks 22-6 at Visalia during the third week of April. The Ports have also scored 18 runs and 16 runs this season when not playing the Oaks.
24 Hours Off: The Oaks will remain in Stockton until the three game series continues Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Below are the expected pitching match ups for the rest of the series:
