Royals Sign Former Travs' Slugger Smith

The Kansas City Star has reported that the Kansas City Royals signed third baseman Corey Smith, who batted .266 with 27 homers and 82 RBIs in 135 games last season in the Angels' system, reaching Triple-A Salt Lake but spending the majority of the campaign with the Arkansas Travelers, the Naturals' rival Texas League team. Smith, a 26-year old Plainfield, NJ resident also received an invitation to big-league camp.

Smith was particularly clutch during the month of June when the Travelers made a late drive to win the first-half division championship for the Texas League North. Smith hit .289 with five homers and 19 RBI. He potentially could be assigned in spring training either to Northwest Arkansas or Triple-A Omaha. A invitation to spring training has also been extended to lefty Tim Hamulack, the veteran who was one of the Naturals' best relievers down the stretch this year.

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals are the Double-A Texas League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals and will open the home portion of their 2009 season on Thursday, April 16th against the San Antonio Missions.
