Roy Rogers Named Flight Assistant Coach

GREENVILLE, S.C., November 2 – Roy Rogers, a former first-round NBA selection and University of Alabama basketball star, has been named assistant coach for the Huntsville Flight of the NBA’s National Basketball Development League according to an announcement by league director of basketball operations Chris Alpert.

Rogers, 31, replaces Michael Born, who took a scouting position with the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA during the offseason. Born is one of nine former NBDL coaches who have moved on to NBA positions over the last three seasons.

The 22nd overall pick by the Vancouver Grizzlies in the 1996 NBA Draft, Rogers played three seasons in the NBA for the Grizzlies, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Denver Nuggets. He averaged 4.8 points and 3.5 rebounds over his NBA career. Rogers was selected to play in the Schick Rookie Game in 1997 and set a Grizzlies record for blocked shots in a season with 163 his rookie year.

Rogers also played four seasons of professional basketball internationally (2000-04). He played in Russia, Italy, Greece and Poland and was an All-Russian first team selection in 2001.

An All-Southeastern Conference performer at Alabama (1992-96), Rogers established himself as a premier collegiate shot blocker. He tied the NCAA record for blocks in a game with 14 against Georgia on Feb. 10, 1996 and is second all-time in the Crimson Tide basketball record book for career blocked shots with 266.

The NBDL, the NBAÂ’s minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBAÂ’s umbrella. Twenty-eight (28) players have been called up the NBA on 39 separate occasions. Nine former NBDL coaches, five athletic trainers, 11 referees and 29 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the leagueÂ’s inaugural season in November 2001.
