Rox Comeback Attempt Falls Short in Ninth
July 16, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release
Old Orchard Beach, Maine - Despite a late ninth inning surge sparked by Mansfield native Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt), the Brockton Rox fell to the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide, 4-3, on Monday night in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) action.
Trailing by two in the top of the ninth, Wiseman spearheaded the comeback effort by drawing a two-out walk. Norton native Sean Ryan (Wheaton) immediately followed with an RBI double to score Wiseman and pull Brockton (15-16) within one.
With the visitors threatening to tie the game, Raging Tide reliever Henry Van Zant (Bowdoin) recorded the final out of the game to hold off the Rox and earn his league-leading seventh save of the season.
Heading into the fifth tied at one, Wiseman ripped a one-out triple to ignite the Brockton offense. Moments later, Vito Perna (Southeastern Louisiana) laced an RBI single to plate Wiseman and give the Rox a 2-1 lead.
However, Old Orchard Beach (14-16) bounced back in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs to take a one-run lead thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from Saige Jenco (Virginia Tech) and Boston Langley (Rollins). An inning later, the Raging Tide tacked on another when Sam Balzano (Maine) scored what proved to be the game-winning run on an error to make it, 4-2.
Oliver Van Zant (Bowdoin) chalked up nine strikeouts in his first win of the season (1-2). In six innings, the right-hander conceded two runs on five hits and two walks. Robert Rozzi (Massasoit C.C.) preserved Van Zant's stellar performance, allowing no hits and just one walk in 1.2 innings of relief.
Westwood's John Sheehan (William & Mary) and Sal Minichino (Concordia) were impressive once again out of the bullpen for Brockton, combining to surrender one unearned run on two walks and no hits in three innings of relief.
Evan Brown (Newberry) suffered the loss (1-3) for the Rox after allowing three runs on six hits and one walk in five innings on the hill.
Wiseman led the Rox offensively, going 1-for-3 with a triple, two walks, a stolen base, and two runs scored, while Scituate's Jordan Berry (George Washington) went 2-for-4.
Jenco went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to pace the Raging Tide at the dish.
The Rox are off until Wednesday morning, when they host the Nashua Silver Knights for a matinee matchup at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, the Raging Tide return home to face the Martha's Vineyard Sharks on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
