Roughnecks Sign Former Prairie View A&M QB K.J. Black & Former Fort Valley State LB Trent Newton

MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks have announced on Thursday, May 19 that the organization has signed former Prairie View A&M University quarterback K.J. Black and former Fort Valley State University linebacker Trent Newton. K.J. Black spent two seasons at Prairie View A&M after transferring from Western Kentucky. Black was named the 2009 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year after recording 22 touchdown passes and leading the FCS with a 70.4 completion percentage mark. LB Trent Newton was a 2009 All-SIAC Second Team selection after finishing with 55.0 total tackles along with two sacks and two fumble recoveries.

QB K.J. Black Ht. 6'3" Wt. 225 lbs. Prairie View A&M University -

After transferring from Western Kentucky, QB K.J. Black would spend two seasons at Prairie View A&M University (2009, 2010). As a senior in 2010, Black threw for a career best 2,154 yards on 168 of 285 passing (58.9%) with 13 touchdown passes to only five interceptions.

As a junior, Black would help lead the Panthers to the 2009 SWAC Championship when he threw for 2,033 yards, completing 162 of 230 passes (70.4%) and throwing for 22 touchdown passes. Black also rushed for 170 yards on 56 carries with four touchdowns during the 2009 season. Black would go on to be named the 2009 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year and lead the FCS with a 70.4 completion percentage mark. He was named MVP of the SWAC Championship Game after throwing for three touchdowns in a 30-24 win over Alabama A&M.

LB Trent Newton Ht. 6'1" Wt. 225 lbs. Fort Valley State University -

Linebacker Trent Newton spent two seasons at Savannah State University where he led the program in tackles in both seasons, including 114 tackles as a sophomore in 2007 before transferring to Fort Valley State. Prior to the start of his senior season in 2009 at Fort Valley State, Newton would be named to the Preseason All-SIAC Team. He would go on to record 55.0 total tackles during the 2009 regular season including 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two pass break ups, and two fumble recoveries. He capped the 2009 season by being named to the All-SIAC Second Team.
