West Texas Roughnecks News Release

ODESSA, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks announced on Thursday, January 14 that former East Carolina University defensive back Jerek Hewett has committed to the Roughnecks for the upcoming 2010 season. Hewett (5'11", 195 lbs.) was a four-year letterman ('05-'08) while at ECU and converted from wide receiver to defensive back following his freshman season. As a senior in 2008, Hewett was projected to have a breakout season after having impressive performances in wins over Virginia Tech and West Virginia. However, Hewett was limited to six games in 2008 after sustaining a shoulder injury. Hewett would finish the season with 13 total tackles with one forced fumble and an interception.

As a junior in 2007, Hewett played in all 13 games with eight starts during the season. Hewett finished sixth on the team with 49 total tackles and recorded a team-best five pass break-ups. He would register a career-best eight tackles against Houston and he posted at least five tackles in four games during the season. Hewett intercepted two passes during the 2007 season which ranked second on the team, and he would record two total tackles and a pass break-up in East Carolina's win over No. 22 Boise State in the Hawaii Bowl.

"Jerek is a gifted athlete who has incredible speed and that should be a big help to us in the secondary this season. He also has good open-field tackling abilities and he will be a factor for us on special teams by returning kickoffs." stated West Texas Roughnecks Head Coach Chris Williams.

In his sophomore season in 2006, Hewett played in all 13 games as a member of the ECU special teams unit and as a reserve in the secondary. Hewett finished second on the team with 125 kickoff return yards trailing only Chris Johnson (Tennessee Titans) in 2006. Hewett finished '06 with two tackles with one forced fumble and two pass break-ups. As a freshman in 2005, Hewett played in eight games at wide receiver recording nine receptions for 76 yards including 28 rushing yards. Hewett additionally was part of the ECU's 4 x 100 track relay squad which advanced to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in '05. Hewett helped the 4 x 100 relay team to a third place finish overall in Conference-USA.

Hewett was a four-year letterman at West Brunswick High School playing at both running back and defensive back. He was named offensive MVP as both a sophomore and junior, and he earned player-of-the-week honors 11 times (eight in 2003 as a junior).
