Roughnecks Pick Up Non-Conference Home Win Over Omaha, 39-16

MIDLAND, TX.: The West Texas Roughnecks came away with a 39-16 win over the Omaha Beef on Saturday evening, April 16 from the Ector County Coliseum. The Roughnecks defense recorded with three interceptions including a safety in the win as QB Arkelon Hall threw for two scores, and running back Evin Jones added two rushing touchdowns helping the Roughnecks improve to 5-2 on the season as the Omaha Beef dropped to 3-3.

The game started on a high note for the Roughnecks as WR Josh Floyd returned the opening kickoff 49 yards down to the Omaha one-yard line. RB Evin Jones would record a one-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage giving the Roughnecks a 7-0 lead. The Omaha Beef would quickly counter on their first possession of the game as QB Silas Fluellen found wide out O.J. Simpson for a 33-yard touchdown pass to tie the ball game at 7. Omaha would later take their first lead of the ball game when kicker C.J. Gradoville added a 37-yard field goal making it 10-7. The Roughnecks would tie the game at 10 later on in the quarter as kicker Zeke Arevalo connected on a field goal from 50 yards out.

The Roughnecks continued to gain momentum in the first quarter as DL Jeramie Richardson sacked Silas Fluellen in the end-zone for a safety giving the Roughnecks a 12-10 lead. With the ball back in their possession, the Roughnecks would expand on their lead in the second quarter when QB Arkelon Hall found WR Wilson Kimble for a 23-yard touchdown pass making it 19-10. Both teams exchanged interceptions later on in the second quarter as Roughnecks DB Clarence Wright intercepted Silas Fluellen and Courtney Grixby intercepted Arkelon Hall. Nearing the end of the first half, Silas Fluellen would be intercepted for a second time, this time by DL Ronnie Mason who returned it to the Omaha two-yard line. However, the Roughnecks were unable to convert any points off the turnover resulting in a 19-10 halftime lead.

Both teams would exchange field goals to open the second-half as the Roughnecks at that point led 22-13. After C.J. Gradoville connected on a 54-yard field goal to cut the Roughnecks lead to 22-16, the Roughnecks would counter with a three-yard touchdown run by RB Evin Jones giving the Roughnecks a 29-16 lead at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Roughnecks defense came away with another important stop inside the red-zone as DB Marrio Norman intercepted Maurice Avery which allowed the Roughnecks offense to go 45 yards in five plays and cap the drive off with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Arkelon Hall to Wilson Kimble, giving the Roughnecks a 36-16 lead. The Roughnecks would tack on a late field goal from Zeke Arevalo to help close out the win at 39-16.

The West Texas Roughnecks will travel to Amarillo next week to face the Amarillo Venom on Saturday, April 23 as the Omaha Beef will return home next week to host the Nebraska Danger on Saturday, April 23.
