Roughnecks Offense Comes From Behind To Win Black & Blue Game

MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks held an intrasquad scrimmage titled the "Black & Blue Game" from Memorial Stadium in Big Spring on Saturday afternoon, February 12. The match-up featured the Roughnecks offense versus the Roughnecks defense as the offense came from behind in the second-half to win the scrimmage, 50-45. Former Morgan State QB Carlton Jackson produced three touchdown passes to three different receivers as second-year defensive back Clarence Wright posted a 25-yard interception returned for a touchdown midway through the first-half.

The Roughnecks defense started off strong taking a 12-0 lead by recording back-to-back stops on the first two drives of the game. The offense countered with a 28-yard touchdown run from running back Evin Jones which cut the lead to 12-6. The offense was able to pull even as former Memphis QB Arkelon Hall found DeWayne Hogan for a nine-yard touchdown pass to make it a 12-12 ball game. On the ensuing drive, QB Brandon Jones was intercepted by DB Clarence Wright who returned it 25 yards for the go-ahead score. Based on the scoring system, Wright recorded 15 points on the play giving the defense a 27-12 lead.

Carlton Jackson recorded his first of three touchdown passes on the next possession when he found WR Anthony Weeden for a 15-yard touchdown pass making the score 27-18. The Roughnecks defense would extend their lead to 39-18 with back-to-back stops on two possessions. The Roughnecks offense would then score on three consecutive drives starting with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Carlton Jackson to wide out Wilson Kimble to make it 39-24. QB Arkelon Hall would add an 11-yard touchdown run on the next drive to close the gap at 39-30, and RB Evin Jones posted a one-yard touchdown run to make it a one point ball game at 39-38.

The Roughnecks offense would take their first lead of the ball game at 44-39 when Carlton Jackson found WR Ashlan Davis for a 24-yard touchdown pass. That lead would expand to 50-39 when Anthony Weeden returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards for a touchdown. In the final possession of the Black & Blue Game the Roughnecks defense held the offense on a fourth down and long situation resulting in the 50-45 final score.
