
Roughnecks Fall Short to Brawlers, 31-27

MIDLAND, TX. : In a close Lone Star divisional match-up, the Oklahoma City Bricktown Brawlers came away with a 31-27 win over the West Texas Roughnecks on Sunday, March 20 from the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. A late interception by Brawlers DB Kendale Rayford as the Roughnecks were driving and trailing 31-27 sealed the win for the Brawlers improving their record to 2-2 as the Roughnecks dropped to 2-1 on the season.
The Roughnecks started the game strong on their first possession as QB Arkelon Hall found WR Josh Floyd for a 29-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage making it 7-0. The Brawlers quickly countered to tie the game at seven when QB Nate Samas found wide out Josh Richey for a 25-yard touchdown pass. The Roughnecks would break the tie on their next possession as Arkelon Hall connected with WR Tim Bush for an 18-yard touchdown pass making it 14-7. As the first quarter came to a close, Brawlers QB Nate Samas tied the game at 14 with a one-yard touchdown run following an Arkelon Hall fumble in which LB Steve Allen returned it back to the Roughnecks one-yard line.
In the second quarter the Brawlers picked up their first lead of the game with a 33-yard field goal from Josh Arauco and quickly extended that lead to 18-14 when Josh Floyd was tackled in the end-zone on the ensuing kickoff for a one-point rouge. The Roughnecks gained momentum heading into half-time as Arkelon Hall capped off a six-play 45-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run giving the Roughnecks the lead at 20-18.
The second-half began with an exchange of missed field goals between both teams, but the Brawlers would regain the lead at 25-20 when Nate Samas connected with WR Landon Turner for a 45-yard touchdown pass. The Roughnecks once again would quickly counter and retake the lead on their next possession as Arkelon Hall found receiver Josh Floyd for a 29-yard touchdown pass to give the Roughnecks a 27-25 lead.
With defense dominating the majority of the fourth quarter, the Roughnecks had an opportunity to run time off the clock holding on to a two-point lead, however Brawlers DL Billy Harrison recovered a Roughnecks fumble off a snap in the back of the end-zone to give the Brawlers a 31-27 lead. As the Brawlers had the football with two minutes remaining in regulation, Nate Samas was intercepted by DB Anthony Beck, however Roughnecks QB Arkelon Hall was intercepted by DB Kendale Rayford on the next possession with just over a minute remaining in the game to close out the victory for the Brawlers at 31-27.
