West Texas Roughnecks News Release
ODESSA, TX. : The Odessa Roughnecks look to get back on the winning track as they travel to Corpus Christi to face the 5-1 Hammerheads on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 6:05 p.m. The Roughnecks are coming off a difficult loss at CenTex, 84-54, back on Saturday, April 26, 2008. The loss snapped the Roughnecks 3-game winning streak and dropped their record back to an even 3-3. The Hammerheads enter the match-up on a 2-game winning streak with victories over San Angelo, 60-53 back on April 19, and Fairbanks, 55-37, back on April 26. Corpus has not lost at home this season as the Roughnecks enter this Saturday 1-3 on the road.
The Hammerheads will be led by QB Dustin Almond who ranks 2nd in the IFL in passing yards with 1,297, average yards a game at 216.2, and 3rd in touchdown passes at 29. WR Schuyler Anderson leads Corpus in all-purpose yards and all Hammerheads wide receivers with 36 catches for 325 yards and is second with 8 TD receptions. WR Ed Giddings is another threat that Almond can use to his advantage. He enters this weekend with 31 catches for 325 yards and 10 TD receptions. The Hammerheads have had big time starts to all their games in 2008. Corpus Christi is outscoring their opponents in the first half 192-115. Their fast starts have allowed the defense to hold down the opposition in the second half, which have led to their 5 wins.
The Odessa Roughnecks were hurt by turnovers in their recent loss to the CenTex Barracudas. It will be hard for Odessa to get by with a win in Corpus if the turnover battle is not won. QB Dennis Gile will be under center as he comes in with 736 passing yards and 15 touchdown passes. The big story is the return of WR Joel Babb who set IFL receiving records in 2006 with yards in a game (215) and yards in a season (1,507).
"Having Joel back is a big thing. He has looked very sharp in practice and has had no problem with understanding the plays. It helps because we don't have to have many meetings before and after practice for Joel to go over anything regarding the offense." says Head Coach Chris Williams.
The Roughnecks secondary will consist of DB Brandon Douglas, DB Cameron Rodgers and DB Tony Lukins. The three backs have collected 10 picks this season and each of them have returned at least one for a score. They will bring hard-hitting defense and plenty of pressure on a Corpus offense that ranks 4th in the IFL averaging nearly 55 points a game.
