West Texas Roughnecks News Release

MIDLAND, TX.: The West Texas Roughnecks capped off their 2011 regular season road schedule in big fashion in Oklahoma City on Saturday, May 28 by defeating the Bricktown Brawlers 48-6. Starting Roughnecks QB K.J. Black finished with four touchdown passes, including two to WR Wilson Kimble, as the Roughnecks defense recorded three interceptions in the win. The Roughnecks clinched a playoff berth with the win making it their seventh trip to the playoffs in eight seasons of play. In addition, the Roughnecks enter next week in a first place tie with the Allen Wranglers in the Lone Star Division at 8-4 as the Brawlers have moved to 2-10 on the season.

The game itself started off slow as both teams were unable to produce any points on their opening possessions. However, the Roughnecks would strike first midway through the first quarter as RB DeWayne Hogan posted a nine-yard touchdown run to cap off a five-play 23-yard drive, giving the Roughnecks a 7-0 lead. Quickly after the score, the Bricktown Brawlers closed the deficit at 7-6 when QB Derrick Dickerson connected with WR DaRon Lawrence for a 26-yard touchdown pass late in the opening quarter, it would be the only score from the Brawlers throughout the rest of the game.

In the second quarter, the Roughnecks were held short of the end-zone on a fourth down and goal situation on the next series, but Roughnecks linebacker Tray Hardaway would intercept Brawlers QB Derrick Dickerson on the next OKC drive to set up a 22-yard touchdown pass from QB K.J. Black to WR Wilson Kimble making it 13-6. Following a blocked field goal, the Roughnecks expanded their lead to 20-6 when K.J. Black found a wide open Wilson Kimble for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Near the end of the first-half, Roughnecks DB Clarence Wright intercepted QB Derrick Dickerson giving the ball back to the Roughnecks offense with just a few seconds left before half-time. On the final play of the first-half QB K.J. Black connected with WR Josh Floyd for a 41-yard touchdown pass, a pass that just cleared the hands of DB James Colter, leading to a 26-6 half-time lead for the Roughnecks.

More of the same would occur in the second-half for the Roughnecks. Following another blocked Brawlers field goal attempt, Roughnecks kicker Zeke Arevalo tacked on a 33-yard field goal and Roughnecks RB Evin Jones recorded a one-yard touchdown run to give the Roughnecks a 36-6 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter started on a high note for the Roughnecks defense as LB Eric Henri came away with his third interception of the season giving the ball back to the Roughnecks offense. Following a five-play 37-yard drive, Roughnecks QB K.J. Black connected with WR Ashlan Davis for a 17-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-6 as a two-point conversion attempt after the score was no good. The final score of the game once again came from Ashlan Davis this time on a four-yard touchdown run to extend the Roughnecks lead to 48-6. The Roughnecks defense would compile two sacks during the Brawlers final drive of the game, one from Jermaine Blakely and the other from Jeramie Richardson.

The eighth overall win of the 2011 regular season for the Roughnecks is the most since the 2007 season when the Roughnecks finished 8-6. The Roughnecks will be back at home next week on Saturday, June 4 to host the Arizona Adrenaline as the Bricktown Brawlers (OKC) will be on the road next week to face the Amarillo Venom on Monday, June 6.
