FC Tulsa News Release
The Tulsa Roughnecks took another step forward Saturday night in their preseason preparations for their first-ever campaign in USL. The Roughnecks faced another USL side for the first time and the result was a 2-0 victory over Saint Louis FC before a sellout crowd at Soccer Park in St. Louis.
The Roughnecks took advantage of an own goal to take a first-half lead, and Gibson Bardsley sealed the victory with a goal late into the second half. The win improved Tulsa's preseason record to 3-1-0.
Tulsa goalkeeper Zac Lubin recorded his second straight shutout in the Roughnecks 2-0 win over Saint Louis FC Saturday night in St. Louis.
The game featured the long anticipated return of outdoor, professional soccer to St. Louis, and Saint Louis FC fans, buoyed by its supporters group the Saint Louligans, provided a regular season atmosphere for the two teams.
In the early portion of the first half, Saint Louis FC controlled the majority of the possession but could not beat Roughnecks goalkeeper Zac Lubin. The crossbar helped to keep them off the scoreboard halfway through the half.
Later in the half, the Roughnecks opened the scoring when a cross from midfielder Adam Black was deflected into the net for an own goal, giving Tulsa a 1-0 lead.
Roughnecks defenders Ryan Price, Ben Brewster, Brady Ballew and Mason Grimes worked to keep the score at 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.
The Roughnecks started strongly in the second half and Black was again an active part of the attack. His run earned a corner kick for Tulsa, but the lead remained at one goal.
Midfielder Steven Miller tested the Saint Louis goal a few minutes later, and a follow up header from Andy Lorei sailed over the crossbar.
Saint Louis forward Bryan Gaul rattled the crossbar for the second time later in the half before the Roughnecks put the game away with a second goal.
In the 77th minute, Ben Everson delivered a picture-perfect through ball that Bardsley slotted into the back of the net to put the Roughnecks in front 2-0.
Lubin and his defense made sure the lead held, as the big goalkeeper recorded his second shutout of the week. On Wednesday, he recorded a clean 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over the University of Tulsa.
The Tulsa Roustabouts, the Roughnecks official supporters group, awarded their Man of the Match honor to Bardsley for providing the goal that solidified the win.
The Roughnecks and Saint Louis FC will meet again in one week in downtown Tulsa. The two clubs will face each other on Saturday, March 21 at ONEOK Field in their final preseason game. It will be the first action for the Roughnecks in their downtown Tulsa home.
