Rough Riders Week Ahead
June 16, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Long Island Rough Riders News Release
(Plainview, N.Y., June 16, 2004) â The Long Island Rough Riders will face both of their Atlantic Division opponents this weekend. On Friday, June 18th, they will play the Harrisburg City Islanders in Harrisburg, P.A., and then travel further west to face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Sunday, June 20th.
In a close battle last Saturday Long Island suffered a tough 2-1 defeat to the Wilmington Hammerheads. It was the first game for new signee and former Colombian international Wilmer Cabrera. That leaves the team with a 1-5-1 record and 4 points, putting the Rough Riders in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division and 10th overall in the PSL.
The opponent of Friday's match, the Harrisburg City Islanders, are currently ranked 2nd in the Atlantic division and 8th in the PSL. Head Coach Bill Becher's team holds a record of 3-3-2, winning twice at home while losing one to Wilmington 3-1.
On Sunday, June 20th, the Rough Riders face the PSL and the Atlantic Division leading team, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. They have not lost at home in their first five home games and have allowed only two goals at Moon HS Tiger Stadium. Their overall record is 7-2-1.
Pittsburgh's leading scorer is Said Ali with six goals out of nine games, ranking him 3rd in the league in goals scored. He is followed by Long Island's Derrick Etienne with five goals out of six games. Another dangerous attacking player for Pittsburg Head Coach Ricardo Iribarren is David Flavius with five goals and two assists.
Rough Riders Head Coach Ronan Wiseman commented on the upcoming matches. "This weekend is going to be crucial because both opponents are competing with us in the Atlantic Division. It will be a fight for the two divisional playoff-spots. Pittsburgh is especially tough, having players returning from last year's A-League team."
The Long Island Rough Riders will return home on Saturday June 26, 2004 to play the New Hampshire Phantoms. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. All Rough Riders home games are played at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale.
