
Dynamo defeats the Eagles to advance to round three of the Open Cup

(Browns Summit, NC) The Charlotte Eagles were on the road tonight to take on the Carolina Dynamo in a second round U.S. Open Cup match at McPherson Stadium. Charlotte came out strong to take the early lead, but the match ended in a 2-4 loss to the Dynamo.
The Eagles started out strong and physical, and got on the scoreboard early. In the fourth minute, Jacob Coggins found a loose ball inside the box, and placed an uncontested shot inside the left post from about 10 yards out, to take the 1-0 lead. In the 9th minute, Coggins again on the attacked drove inside the box challenging the keeper. The Dynamo keeper came charging out and took out Coggins inside the box, Charlotte was looking for a call and resulting penalty kick, but no call was made. Jacob got his second goal of the game and eighth of the season in the 11th minute. Eagles midfielder Jason Hotchkin drove down the right side and maneuvered through pressure. Hotchkin sent a hard low cross finding Coggins at the top of the six yard box for the goal.
Fourteen minutes into the half, Carolina turned up the offensive pressure and found the back of the net. Justin Moose fired a low shot from the top of the eighteen yard box, beating Eagles goalkeeper Eric Pattison to the bottom right corner. Coggins had another great scoring attempt in the seventeenth minute for Charlotte, but the shot was swallowed up by the advancing Dynamo keeper. In the 22nd minute Jason Hotchkin sent a long ball deep into Dynamo territory to the feet of veteran forward Dustin Swinehart. Swinehart fired a low close range shot that snuck through the legs of the keeper, but defelcted up and over the net. Charlotte moved the ball well with possession and controlled the game through the first part of the half.
The Carolina Dynamo evened the score in the 32nd minute. A defensive breakdown allowed Carolina midfielder Tim Merrit to weave through and send a shot from inside the 18 yard box past Pattison. The Dynamo took the lead six minutes later, when Carolina sent a long ball into the box. Eagles defender Kevin O'Brien lost his footing, while Dynamo forward Steve Rhyne put away the easy goal. The Dynamo finished off the scoring of the match in the 57th minute. Defender Reggie Korenteng pushed down the right flank into Charlotte territory and made a perfect cross for forward Marcus Storey. Storey finished with a diving header.
Carolina's 4-2 victory advances them into round three of the US Open Cup and eliminates the Eagles from the tournament. The Dynamo will host the Atlanta Silverbacks for round three on June 30th.
The Eagles have another doubleheader evening with the Lady Eagles on June 19th at beautiful Waddell Stadium. At 5:30 pm the Lady Eagles will host the Northern Virginia Majestics and the Eagles host Southern Division rival Wilmington Hammerheads at 8:00 pm. June 19th is also Bojangles' Night with live music and post-game concert by Jailbird Paul. Plus, every Saturday night Eagles match is a Harris Teeter VIC Six Dollar Saturday, with $6 admission for those that show their VIC card.
