July 9, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release
The Springfield Sliders took the final game of their three game series against the Terre Haute Rex 5-3 to head into the All-Star break on a positive note. For the first time in this series, it was the Sliders who scored first. After leading off the inning by walking, CF Mike Fitzgerald scored on an RBI single by 3B Sean Gerber. In the bottom of the inning, Sliders' starter Wade Rothermich, making his first start on the mound for the Sliders this year, stranded two runners in scoring position, allowing the Sliders to keep their lead. They would then add to it in the third inning when 2B Michael Hurwitz hit an RBI double and two Terre Haute errors allowed Hurwitz to score Springfield's second run of the night. In the bottom of the inning, the Rex got their first run of the day off of Rothermich, but 1B Reagan Fowler hit a triple and scored on an infield RBI single by Hurwitz in the fourth to restore their two run lead at 3-1. In the top of the fifth inning, Gerber hit a two run home run, his third of the year, to extend the Sliders' lead to 5-1. Rothermich was outstanding on the night, lasting 6.2 innings, striking out 7 and giving up just one earned run. He loaded the bases in the seventh, but Cody Repenning came out of the Sliders' bullpen and induced a fly out to end the threat. The Rex would get two runs in the eighth inning, but the Sliders' Rob McDonnell slammed the door in the ninth to seal the victory for Rothermich and earn McDonnell his first save. The Sliders will now be off for the next couple of days for the 2012 All-Star break. The All-Star Game will be at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield on Wednesday at 7:05. The All-Star Game will be broadcast on the Sliders' Ustream channel. The Sliders return to action Friday night when they host the Quincy Gems at 6:35.
The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
