Rosters set for 2008 WNBA season

NEW YORK, May 16, 2008 - WNBA teams have set their rosters for the 2008 season, which tips off tomorrow with six games on opening day. The action gets underway on ABC at 3:30 p.m. ET as the defending champion Phoenix Mercury host the Los Angeles Sparks. Led by the high-scoring duo of Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter, the Mercury will square off against the Sparks, who are led by a frontcourt tandem of Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker. Leslie returns to the court after giving birth to her first child last summer while Parker makes her professional debut.
Rosters will consist of 11 active players and up to two inactive players throughout the regular season. Teams must designate players as active or inactive 60 minutes prior to each game.
WNBA rosters feature 20 international players from 15 countries. In addition, WNBA games and programming will reach fans in 203 countries and territories in 32 languages.
Comprised of 14 teams and entering its 12th season, the WNBA is the longest-running and most successful women's professional team sports league in America. The 2008 season tips off May 17 with ESPN2 again providing appointment viewing in the form of its "WNBA Tuesdays" telecasts. Combined coverage on ABC and ESPN2 will include 21 national telecasts, while NBA TV, the league's 24-hour television network, will offer 70 regular-season contests.
