The Richmond Roosters ended their first road trip with a 2-1 record, splitting the double header in Evansville on Monday. Winning the opener on Saturday night 2-1, the Roosters and the Otters were rained out on Sunday. The Roosters came back with a 3-0 win in the opener and lost the night cap 3-2.
Right hander Chris Speigner (1-0) got the start in the first game and went six innings giving up no runs and only two hits. Aaron Parker came on in relief in the seventh to earn the save.
The Roosters scored their first two runs in the third as Rory Thornton doubled to drive in Jose Sandoval Jr. who reached base after being hit by a pitch. Matt Butler then sacrificed Jeremiah Klosterman in for the second run.
They added another in the fifth when Matt Butler got his second RBI of the day, driving Sandoval in for the second time in the game. Rooster pitching shut out Evansville for a final score of 3-0.
In the second game of the double header, the Roosters came up short in a 3-2 loss, their first of the season. Travis Holland (0-1) started for the Roosters and picked up the loss. He gave up two unearned runs in the third and one earned run in the fourth.
The Roosters were scoreless until the top of the seventh when they rallied to score two runs on RBI singles by Jose Sandoval Jr. and Rory Thornton. With two runners on base, Drew Miller flied out to center ending the late rally. Thornton was 2 for 4 with a Double and an RBI single as the Roosters split before a Memorial Day crowd of 2,620 in Evansville.
Tuesday is an off day for the Roosters, before the second road trip of the 2003 season. Richmond will travel to Washington to take on the Wild Things Wednesday at 6:05 PM.
