Rookie's Late Tally Gives Phantoms 2-1 Win

PHILADELPHIA - Claude Giroux scored his team-leading 14th goal of the year just over seven minutes into the third period to push the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday evening at the Wachovia Spectrum. Giroux's fifth game-winner of the year gave the Phantoms their fifth consecutive win and moved them into a tie for third place with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, as well as within five points of second-place Bridgeport and seven of first-place Hershey in the East Division standings. In addition, the Phantoms helped two great charitable organizations with the Scott Hartnell Glove and Mitten Toss and the annual Helping Hands Auction.
For the fifth consecutive game, the Phantoms jumped on the board first, doing so with 4:03 remaining in the opening period. While playing four-aside hockey late in the period, Boyd Kane gained the Penguin blue line after receiving a pass from Jonathan Matsumoto. Kane skated through the middle and rifled a wrist shot past the glove of John Curry to give the Phantoms a 1-0 advantage.
Wilkes-Barre was able to even the score at the 5:18 mark of the second period. Off a Jean-Phillipe Cote pass, Jean-Michel Daoust fired a slap shot from the top of the left circle. Scott Munroe got spun around searching for the rebound and Paul Bissonnette was able to stuff the puck across the goal line to make the score 1-1.
Giroux netted the game winner 7:10 into the third period. While in his own zone, defenseman Nate Guenin blocked a shot and the puck wound up in his equipment. He alertly tossed it to Jonathan Kalinski, who sent a cross ice pass that came perfectly off the boards and allowed Giroux to race in on a breakaway. He snapped a wrist shot over the glove of Curry to give the Phantoms the 2-1 lead
Munroe stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced while Curry made 23 saves on 25 shots. Neither team capitalized with the man advantage on the night with Philadelphia going 0-4 on the power play and Wilkes-Barre going 0-5.
Flyers winger Scott Hartnell was on hand to sign autographs prior to the game and to trigger the first-intermission glove toss, inspired by Hartnell's own glove-tossing miscue in a game earlier this month against Tampa Bay. The evening collected 838 pairs of gloves and mittens along with 80 hats, which will all be donated to Operation Warm here in Philadelphia.
Also on Sunday, the Phantoms staged their ninth annual Helping Hands auction to benefit the Children's Miracle Network at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The sale of handprints made by the entire Phantoms roster and selected Flyers players generated $4,275 for the charity.
