Rookie leads Sockers to Win

Hat trick hero, Jacob Ward, led the Sockers to a 9-8 overtime victory over the Monterrey Fury on Friday night. With the win, the Sockers ended their two-game skid and improved their season record to 9-8.

The Sockers struck first with Mariano Bollella scoring on a power-play goal at 4:35 in the first quarter off an assist by Paul Wright. With the period winding down, Wright, assisted by Sean Bowers, followed up with a goal at 12:01 putting San Diego up 2-0. Monterrey quickly answered the Sockers' charge with two goals of their own. Genoni Martinez scored first for Monterrey at 12:10 on a restart goal and then followed up with an assist to Marco Lopez to end the period tied with the Sockers.

Second period action was just as furious with Tony Velazquez finding Ward at 3:23 moving the Sockers up to 3-2. At 6:33 in the period it was Wright again, assisted by goalkeeper Victor Nogueira (4-2).

San Diego and Monterrey traded goals throughout the second half. Monterrey's standout player of the night, Martinez, found the back of the net assisted by Victor Quiroz (3-4). Martinez tallied his third goal at 3:55 with help from teammate Oswaldo Medina (4-4). Sockers forward Tony Velazquez answered back at 8:10, assisted by Ward (5-4). A minute later, it was Martinez with his fourth goal of the night, this time helped along by Lopez (5-5). Monterrey's Armando Valdivia ended third period scoring with a goal at 12:13 off an assist by Medina (5-6).

Fourth period play remained tight with both teams trading leads. The Sockers' Mauricio Alegre scored his first goal of the night at 3:37 to tie the score, off an assist by Bowers. Quiroz quickly answered for the Fury with an assist by Medina (6-7), but the Sockers' Matt Broadhead leveled the score again with his first goal of the season off an assist by Ward. The Fury took the lead again with a goal by Martinez (8-7), but it was Ward, assisted by Johnson at 9:49, tying the game at 8-8.

The game went into overtime and play continued at a feverish pace but it was San Diego's Ward scoring the game-winner at 10:29 off an assist by team captain Mariano Bollella. Ward led the team in scoring with five points.

Sean Bowers led the Sockers' defensive brigade with four blocks on the night. Goalkeeper Nogueira earned the win with 16 of 24 shots saved. He improved his record to 9-8 and is undefeated against Monterrey in three games.

For the Fury, it was Martinez leading the way with five goals and one assist, making him the highest scorer against the Sockers this season. Medina led the defensive charge with four blocks against the Sockers. Goalkeeper Christian Guemez saved 19 of 28 shots faced.
