Rome Frenzy News Release

ROME, NY (1/30/11) by Walter Beverly - You had to be there. Excitment filled the Kennedy Arena as the Rome Frenzy won in a shootout that can only be characterized as a nailbitter. Scoring began in the first period with the Cape Cod Barons' Steve Romanin goal. After Will LaPorte of the Frenzy went to the penalty box for elbowing and fighting, Vinnie Nucci scored a short handed goal on a pass from Tony Monte on a two on one drive at 19.03, ending the period at one a piece.

Four penalties punctuated the second period, with two a piece with no scoring. Both teams seemd to be trying to work off the other's mistakes but to no avail. Goalkeepers Eric Kiefer for the Rome Frenzy and John Zdunkiewicz of the Cap Cod Barons, did well in holding their opponent's skaters at bay.

After much back and forth play on the ice, the Baron's Dave Lawrence scored with an assist from Defenseman Dan Lind at 8:05 in the Third Period on a power play due to Jeffer Spencer of the Frenzy being called for interference. Not to be outdone, the Frenzy came back with a goal by Tony Monte with a Vinnie Nucci assist. At 17:57, Kirk Bolduc was called for what the fans considered a very questionable call. In spite of being down one man, Vinnie Nucci and Tony Monte teamed up with a Nucci goal at 18:20 for the short handed goal.. Now tied at three, the clock wound down and forced a three on three tie breaker. In the tie breaker, Barons net minder John Zdunkiewicz faced three hard shots from the Frenzy while Eric Kiefer of the Frenzy fended off only one relatively easy shot. The tie breaker ended with the game still undecided.

In the shoot out, the Rome Frenzy showed their nettle and scored three goals out of four attempts while the Barons were held to no goals. Will LaPorte of the Frenzy, who scored the first goal in the shoot out, got credit for the winning goal making the final score, 4-3 for a Frenzy win.

Vinnie Nucci, first star of the game, continued his point streak at 6 games while Tony Monte, the second star, increased his to eight games. Third star, Eric Kiefer, the Frenzy goalie, came away with 24 saves for his first win of the season.
