Brooklyn Aviators News Release
Danbury, CT- Matthew Puntureri and Mike Thomson both scored in the shootout, while Kevin Druce stopped all four Danbury tries to lift the New York Aviators over the Whalers 3-2 on Sunday night in Federal Hockey League action.
With the win, the A's extended their winning streak to 11 straight games and also snapped the Whalers four game home winning streak.
Druce stopped 44 shots through 65 minutes of hockey to collect his 17th victory of the season, and has gained wins in his last nine starts.
The Whalers notched the game's first goal early on the power play, as Chris Seifert buried his 15th tally of the season just 1:29 in for the 1-0 lead. A's defenseman Stephen Oblenicki went to the box for slashing, and Siefert roofed the Martin Moucha pass over the shoulder Druce.
New York had their opportunity to get on the board with three power play chances, however could not convert on the man advantage.
Seifert then netted his second goal of the game, his 16th of the season, at the 7:37 spot of the second period to give the Whalers the 2-0 edge, but the A's cut the deficit in half close to the midway point.
The Aviators went to the power play 1:14 after Siefert's goal when Lynn Beedle went in the box for Danbury on an elbowing call. Rob Miller's club cashed in on their fourth chance of the game, after Andrew Scampoli potted his 14th marker of the year 13 second into the man advantage.
Both teams registered nine shots in the second, however it was the Whalers skating into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.
Thomson picked up right where he left out for the A's, after returning from the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL, and tied things up in the third period on is 13th marker of the campaign with 8:34 left in regulation.
New York held the fort late in the game killing off a 5-on-3 power play for the Whalers to force the game into overtime.
The extra session produced end-to-end action, however both goalies came up huge for their respected clubs. The best chance came off Siefert's stick, but he rang his slapper of the post that allowed the game to head to the shootout.
The A's won the skills competition 2-0, and improve their record to 22-12-2 as Danbury drops to 17-5-5.
The Aviators head home on Thursday to take on the Cape Cod Barons at 7:05PM. Tickets are still available by calling 718-758-7580, or by logging onto www.newyorkaviators.com.
