'Rome-ing' Along; A's Win 10th Straight

Brooklyn, NY - Casey Mignone picked up the game-winning goal on the power play late in the third period to lift New York over the Rome Frenzy 4-3 in Federal Hockey League action on Saturday night.

The Aviators have now put together 10 consecutive victories, and also won their 11th straight game on home ice to close out the month of January.

New York got on the board in the opening period after Jon Madsen collected his first goal in an Aviator jersey. Madsen skated in from the point, and wristed Jesse Felten's pass over the glove of Rome net minder Anthony Luckow for his second tally of the season at the 4:51 mark. Andrew Scampoli would then put the A's up 2-0, as he knocked home a rebound in front for his 13th marker of the year 3:08 later.

Matt Puntureri netted his team-leading 23rd goal of the season 4:08 into the second period to give New York the 3-0 lead, however it was the Rome Frenzy putting together back to back goals to close out the middle frame. Anthony Monte grabbed his 28th tally of the campaign on a backhand that slipped past the legs of A's goalie Peter Dundovich at the 15:46 spot. Then with 16 seconds left in the second, Marcus Gustaffson put home a one timer in the slot to cut the New York lead to one at 3-2.

Gustaffson would deposit his second goal of the night on the man advantage in the final frame to bring the score to 4-3, however it was not enough as New York hold on for the victory.

Dundovich stopped 25 shots to earn his fifth victory, while Luckow is charged with his fourth loss despite putting aside 30 Aviator tries.

With the win, New York moves to 21-12-2 on the season and now holds 44 points in the FHL standings. Rome falls to 10-27-6 after the loss.

New York hits the road tomorrow night to take on the Danbury Whalers at the Danbury Ice Arena. Puck drop is slated for 5:05 PM, and can be heard live on the FHL Sports Network powered by Live Sports Video. DEFENSE STILL PLAGUES THE ROME FRENZY

by Walter Beverly - Rome Frenzy

After two consecutive losses, the Frenzy went to New York City to face the New York Aviators with Anthony Luckow in goal. Their loss to the Warriors last night showed that the Frenzy could put shots on goal and score but problems with defense and goal keeping still plagues the team. In that last game, the Frenzy were joined by Right Winger, Tim Harris who formerly played with the Utica Blizzard and the Mohawk Valley Prowlers. Tim brings maturity to the youthful Frenzy,

The Aviators drew first blood in the first period at 4:51 with a shot by Jon Madsen followed four minutes later with a goal by Andrew Scampoli, taking a two zero lead. The period ended with a slashing penalty to Aviator's Angelo Serse for slashing at 18:47 and shots on goal by the Frenzy power play, ending the period with a 2 zero lead for the Aviators.

The second period began with Aviators' Serse still in the penalty box for the remaining 47 seconds on his slashing penalty. Jeff Armando drew a hooking penalty at 2:06 which was killed off by the Frenzy. In spite of the penalty kill, Aviators' Matthew Puntureri scored at 4:08 two seconds after the kill. At 6:58, Frenzy's Jake Rinaldo drew two minutes for hooking, giving the Aviators' a second power play followed by Vinnie Nucci of the Frenzy tripping an Aviator at 8:45. The Frenzy penalty killing unit killed off both with only one shot on goal. After a flurry of 9 assaults on goal, over six minutes of play, by the Frenzy, Tony Monte scored with one at 15:46 with Jeff Amando assisting. At 19.44, Marcus Giustafsson scored bringing, the Frenzy within one goal leaving the period at 3-2, the Aviators up by one.

Shots were traded by the Frenzy and the Aviators as the first nine minutes opened the third period each team apparently sizing up the other in the final go around. At 8:58 Frenzy Jeff Spencer drew the sin bin for a minor tripping penalty. The Frenzy penalty kill held its own allowing only two shots on goal, killing of Spencer's penalty. 14:03 saw Aviator's Jesse Felten draw two minutes for elbowing, resulting with only one shot on goal by the Frenzy. Jake Rinaldo of the Frenzy returned the favor giving the Aviators a power play for interference resulting in a power play goal for Aviators' Casey Mignone giving the Aviators a 4 to 2 lead with two minutes fifteen to play. Angelo Serse of the Aviators drew a double minor for high sticking and roughing which put the Frenzy on the board again with a power play goal by Marcus Gustafsson, his second goal of the game, bringing it back to within one, 4-3. However time ran out and the Frenzy were stopped again. A bright spot though was Tony Monte and Vinnie Nucci keeping their point streaks going at seven and five games. respectfully and Marcus Gustafsson's two goals. Next game is 2:05 at the Kennedy Arena on West Embargo St in Rome against the Cape Cod Barons.

Danbury Whalers Feast on Barons, 7-2

Danbury, Connecticut - Seven unanswered goals. Cape Cod scored first and last in this game, but there was no question as to the outcome as the Whalers controlled this one almost from the opening faceoff, out shooting their opponent, 45-21. Two goals apiece from Alec Kirschner, Martin Moucha and Chris Seifert sent the Barons packing. Last Sunday Alec Kirschner was called up to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. Danbury fans were happy for his good fortune, but they were ecstatic to have him back in a Whaler uniform Saturday night, especially in the early going. The Barons did score first with Aaron Boyer connecting at the 2:50 mark. However, it was apparent though that the Whalers aggressive defense and sharp passing offense would be too much for Cape Cod to handle. Danbury evened things up at 8:12 with Martin Moucha and Chris Seifert passes setting up Alec Kirschner for the tying tally. Two minutes later again Kirschner dazzled the Danbury Ice Arena crowd taking the puck around his first defender at the blue line, then easily skating around a second Baron in front of the goal before beating Baron goalie Ryan Supper on the right side for the go ahead goal. Whaler dominance continued in the second period, so much so that the Barons didn't even get a shot on goal for the first ten minutes. Meanwhile Danbury tested the Baron goalies eight times during that span, beating Supper just 1:23 in when Igor Karlov from the corner fed Steve McCelland at the left point who netted a long range slap shot for a 3-1 lead. At that point Supper was done and it was on to dessert for the Whalers who immediately began testing replacement Baron goalie Chris Testa. At 12:41 Martin Moucha picked up his first goal of the night and a nice pass from Chris Seifert. And then again at 17:43 Moucha flipped one in over Testa on another Seifert pass for a 5-1 Danbury advantage. Two goals by Chris Seifert in the third period all but closed out the game pushing the Whaler lead to 7-1 A relatively quiet first period penalty-wise (six total minutes), got noisy in the second period (20 minutes) with the entrance of Corey Fulton into the game for Danbury. Noisy became a roar in the final period with Danbury getting assessed 31 minutes in penalties with the Barons getting 29 total themselves. The win was big for Danbury who is now 6-1-1 in their last eight games and just starting an 11-game homestand and giving them a little breathing room between them and the Barons in the standings.
