June 30, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Medford Rogues News Release
MEDFORD, OR - Despite looking like defeat was inevitable, the Medford Rogues managed to knock out five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to top the visiting Cowlitz Black Bears 5-4 tonight at Harry and David Field. The win gives the Rogues an even stronger grip on second place in the South Division as they hold a 9-10 record. The loss leaves Cowlitz with a 10-11 record in league action.
Things looked grim for the Rogues early on as Cowlitz jumped to a 4-0 lead instantly after the first two innings. Solid pitching on both sides kept the game locked at 4-0 until the bottom of the eighth. A five run storm starting with catcher T.K. McWhertor's single opened the floodgates before a triple by right fielder Billy Frederick effectively gave the Rogues the lead.
Pitcher Taylor Johnson started on the mound for the Rogues and pitched one inning giving up four hits for three runs all earned. Wagner relieved Johnson and pitched six innings giving up three hits for one earned run while striking out three and walking four. Daniel Ferrell and Justin Mulvaney also made appearances on the mound for the Rogues.
On offense, first baseman Nathan Etheridge led the Rogues with four at bats for two hits, one run, and two RBI's. Etheridge now holds a season batting average .230 after tonight's performance. Frederick also had four appearances at the plate for two hits and two RBI's while his batting average improved to .348 for the season.
Cowlitz was led on defense by pitcher Joe Balfour who pitched 7.1 for the Black Bears. Balfour gave up six hits for three runs all earned while striking out three and walking one. Pitcher Cameron Muller recorded the loss for the Bears while Rogues pitcher Daniel Ferrell grabbed the win and Justin Mulvaney was credited with the save.
The Rogues and Black Bears will face off again in game two of a three game series tomorrow night at Harry and David Field. First pitch is set for 6:35pm.
