Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Esmil Rogers recorded eight strikeouts in seven shutout innings as Tulsa blanked Corpus Christi 5-0 Saturday at Whataburger Field before 7,860.
Tulsa improved to 4-4 in the second half of Texas League play, 42-36 overall. The Hooks are 5-4, 36-43.
Rogers (8-2) permitted just four hits. Consecutive singles by Jimmy Van Ostrand and Drew Locke put Hooks runners at the corners with an out in the fourth, but Rogers fanned Collin DeLome and Mitch Einertson to escape the threat.
Locke and DeLome were stranded at third and second after singling and drawing a walk, respectively, to begin the seventh.
Rogers threw 108 pitches, 68 for strikes. Alberto Alburquerque and Edgmer Escalona completed the shutout with an inning of scoreless relief each. Both threw double-play grounders.
Hooks starter Wilton Lopez (1-2) retired the first seven Tulsa batters but coughed up two third-inning runs. Jose Gonzalez stroked a triple to left-center and motored home on Anthony Jackson's two-out double to right. Danny Sandoval plated the speedy lead-off hitter with a single up the middle.
Lopez avoided further trouble in the fifth. Darin Holcomb opened with a double to right-center but was left at third when Jackson grounded to short.
Lopez wasn't as fortunate two innings later. Daniel Mayora doubled to deep center and later scored on Gonzalez' sacrifice fly for a 3-0 Drillers lead.
Jackson's two-run single off Charlie Weatherby in the ninth broke open the contest.
Northwest Arkansas visits Whataburger Field for a three-game series Sunday. Brad James (2-5) faces the Naturals' Anthony Lerew (4-4) at 6:05.
