Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals set a dubious franchise record on Saturday night, giving up 18 runs, in getting pounded by the Frisco RoughRiders by a score of 18-4 at Hammons Field.

It was a difficult night for the Cards' pitching staff, who gave up five home runs and issued 12 walks.

Cards' starter Brian Broderick struggled, dropping his fifth straight decision since coming up from the Florida State League. Frisco capitalized on a pair of Springfield errors in the first inning, capping the inning with a three-run homer from Johnny Whittleman, taking a 4-0 lead after just a half-inning.

After Frisco tacked on another in the second, Tyler Henley ripped his seventh homer of the year, in the bottom of the inning, putting the Cards on the board at 5-1.

Broderick was chased in the third, as Frisco exploded to put the game away. Chad Tracy took Broderick deep for a two-run shot, making it 7-1. Broderick then allowed a double to Renny Osuna and was removed in favor of Brad Furnish. The left-hander struggled coming out of the bullpen, giving up an RBI double, then walking the next two hitters to load the bases. Tim Smith unloaded them with a grand slam, making it 12-1.

Jim Rapoport cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the third off winning pitcher Omar Poveda (7-3), making it 12-3. The homer for Rapoport is his third of the year.

Frisco got three off of Eddie Degerman in the fifth, taking a 15-3 lead. Marco Gonzalez gave the Cards a pick-me-up, retiring the first seven men he faced, before giving up a single and a home run to Whittleman in the sixth, as the Riders made it 17-3.

Colt Sedbrook drove in his first run since being called up from Palm Beach, scoring Tony Cruz with a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth inning, making it 17-4.

Eduardo Sanchez allowed a ninth-inning home run to Chad Tracy, his second of the night and 11th of the year, capping the scoring at 18-4.

The Cards (4-5 Second Half, 42-37 Overall) will look to bounce back on Sunday evening, taking on the Midland RockHounds at Hammons Field, in the opening game of a three-game series. Lance Lynn (6-2) will take on Jason Fernandez (6-6) in the series opener, with game time scheduled for 6:10pm.

Sunday is another Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday. Kids will also "Run the Bases" after the game, thanks to the Killian Group of Companies.

Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. We hope to see you at Hammons Field...Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
