Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - Osvaldo Rodriguez got off to a sizzling start in 2010, with a near no-hitter in his first start and victories in his first eight. He then went on a four-start stretch with three no-decisions and his lone loss of the year, but he has since won two straight, including Friday night's dominant seven-inning performance against the Grand Prairie AirHogs. Rodriguez struck out seven and walked two, and allowed only three hits as his Shreveport-Bossier Captains beat the Grand Prairie AirHogs 4-2 in front of 1,923 at Fair Grounds Field.

Rodriguez (10-1) allowed a one-out double to Antoin Gray in the first inning, but then retired nine straight before an one-out error in the fourth. He then retired eight of nine with the only runner coming on a walk in the fifth. AirHogs lefty Daniel Schmidt (2-4) was almost Rodriguez's equal, but he allowed a one-out double to Uriak Marquez in the first, and after a stolen base and a groundout by Christopher Garcia, the Captains (39-26, 10-8 2nd half) had a 1-0 lead.

Shreveport-Bossier tripled its advantage in the fourth when Palmer Karr hit his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot to left in his second game back from the disabled list. But that was all the Captains would get off Schmidt in the first seven innings, as he held the Captains to six hits and three walks.

The AirHogs (25-40, 1-17) finally got to Rodriguez in the seventh, when he walked Daniel Berg to start the inning. After a strikeout, Jason Stokes turned on a first-pitch fastball and smashed it over the leftfield wall to bring Grand Prairie to within one at 3-2. Rodriguez recovered and got a lineout before a Ben Petralli single put the possible tying run on base, but the Captains' righty struck out Steve Carrillo on his 91st and final pitch of the night.

Jameson Maj pitched a perfect eighth out of the bullpen, and after Andres Rodriguez plated an insurance run with a single in the bottom of the eighth to knock out Schmidt, Hector Carrasco got Stokes to hit into a game-ending double play after a one-out single to close it out and pick up his 12th save of the season, and making Osvaldo Rodriguez the first American Association pitcher to 10 wins this season.
