Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

Shreveport-Bossier Captains shortstop Uriak Marquez hit the first pitch he saw on Thursday for a long two-run home run to put the Captains ahead by two. Four hours later he hit the last pitch he saw through a drawn-in Grand Prairie AirHogs infield to give the Captains a 6-5, 11-inning win in front of 1,814 fans at Fair Grounds Field.

Marquez's homer started a five-run first-inning rally off AirHogs starter Patrick Stanley, on RBI hits from Andres Rodriguez, Joe Urtuzuastegui and Glenn Wilson, which made it look like the Captains were on their way to an easy win. However, Stanley then retired 10 straight hitters as the AirHogs (25-39, 1-16 2nd half) closed the gap slowly against Shreveport-Bossier starter Cody Kelley.

A leadoff walk to Michael Hollimon in the second started trouble for Kelley, with Daniel Berg' single and a double play bringing in one run. Grand Prairie got an unearned run in the fourth to close to within 5-2, and a sacrifice fly and a single by Ben Petralli made the score 5-4.

After five tough innings, Kelley was lifted in favor of Marcus Salmon, who pitched a 1-2-3 sixth with two strikeouts. The righty reliever ran into trouble in the seventh with two two-out walks sandwiched around a single, and Jameson Maj came on to get Steve Carrillo to ground out to keep the Captains' one-run lead.

But Maj gave up Robert Perry's leadoff double in the eighth, and David Espinosa's one-out single tied the game at five. The AirHogs had leadoff hits in the ninth, 10th and 11th but Hector Carrasco and Justin Young (4-4) kept Grand Prairie off the board, with Perry hitting a comebacker to Young to end the 11th in search of his fifth hit of the night.

Meanwhile, a trio of AirHogs relievers kept the Captains (38-26, 9-8) off the board from the fifth through the 10th, until Urtuzuastegui dribbled a grounder towards Petralli at third, who threw the ball away for a two-base error. Jeff Hulett beat out his own sacrifice bunt attempt to put runners at first and third with no outs, forcing the AirHogs to bring the infield and outfield in. Wilson grounded out to third, but Jovanny Rosario walked, setting up Marquez's game-winning hit against Saturday's scheduled starter, Ryne Tacker (4-4).
