Rodgers, quick start lead Colts past Aces
Published on May 17, 2008 under United League Baseball (ULB) News Release
ALEXANDRIA, La. - Caleb Rodgers was dominant, going six innings while striking out 10, as the San Angelo Colts snapped their three-game losing streak with an 11-8 win over the Alexandria Aces.
Tyrone Pendergrass got the action started for San Angelo (2-3) in the first with a bunt single off starter Derek Abriola (0-1). John Anderson doubled down the left field line, and Bryan Frichter was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Jason Crosland then had the first of his four straight walks to give the Colts the lead. Benny Craig and Andres Rodriguez followed with RBI groundouts - although Rodriguez ended up reaching on an error, and the Colts had a 3-0 lead.
Rodgers (2-0) gave up his only run of the night in the bottom of the first, on a two-out opposite-field home run to Bryan Sabatella. He settled down after that, striking out the side (all swinging) in the third and (all looking) in the fourth. The only real jam he was in was in the sixth, but with two on and one out Rodgers fanned Patrick O'Sullivan and induced a groundout from Luis Guance to end the threat.
He has been the winning pitcher in both Colts wins of the young season, and has allowed just one run in nine innings. Rodgers is also the first Colts starter to pitch past the fourth inning.
San Angelo tacked on another run in the third and blew the game open with two runs in the sixth and four more in the eighth. In the top of the sixth, Bryan Frichter hit his first career home run, a line drive to left, and after Jason Crosland hit his second dinger in as many games with one out in the eighth, the Colts took advantage of one of three Alexandria errors to score three more times. The rally was helped by Charly Belew's third infield single (with two RBIs) and Tyrone Pendergrass' bloop two-run hit.
Alexandria (3-2) cut the lead to 10-5 with four runs in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Taylor Fleming, who went two innings in back of Rodgers. After the Colts got one more in the ninth, the Aces made it interesting with three more runs in the bottom half off closer Brian Daly, who made his third appearance of the season without a save opportunity. But Daly got Guance to pop out to end any thoughts of a huge comeback.
Every San Angelo batter had a hit in the game, and seven of them had RBIs, including two off the bats of Pendergrass, Frichter, Crosland, and Belew.
The Colts finish their three-game series in Alexandria, La., with a 5:05 p.m. start on Sunday, May 18. The Colts return to San Angelo for their home opener at Foster Field on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m., and following the game fans will be treated to a Fireworks Show sponsored by Adobe Signs & T-shirts and KLST.
