Rockies Avoid Letdown with Bottom of the 9th Win

July 2, 2005 - Pioneer League (PL)
Casper Ghosts News Release

Over the last two nights the Casper Rockies hitting and pitching has been stellar. It's the defense that's suffered. The Rockies infield has committed 10 errors, including six Saturday night versus Ogden.

The Raptors were riding an eight-game winning streak into the opener of the three-game set in Casper. The Rockies led 6-3 heading into the 7th when Casper committed their fifth error, a costly one with the bases loaded on a poor throw by 3rd baseman Daniel Mayora. Ogden had the bases loaded and all three runs scored to tie the game heading into the 9th.

Closer Andrew Johnston pitched the ninth and shut the Raptors down, giving the Rockies a chance for a win in the bottom of the 9th. Daniel Mayora led the inning off with a double to right giving the Venezuelan some redemption. Later in the inning Rockies lead-off man Corey Wimberly slapped another hit into left scoring Mayora with the game-winner.

Wimberly finished the night 4-5 with the game-winning RBI and two stolen bases. Johnston earned the win and Raptors right-hander Aaron Klusman took the loss.

The Rockies and Raptors play game two of the three-game set tomorrow in Casper with the first pitch scheduled for 4:05.
