Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- After blowing a 3-1 series lead against the Fort Wayne Komets last season, the Rockford IceHogs were determined not to do the same this time around. Mission complete as the IceHogs topped the Komets 2-1 in Game Five in front of 3,553 at the Rockford MetroCentre, eliminating the Komets 4-1 to advance to the Colonial Cup Semifinals.
After a scoreless first period, the Komets opened the second frame with a power play goal. Winger Jonathan Goodwin fired his third tally of the postseason over the shoulder of Scott Dickie just 50 seconds into the middle frame. Rockford responded with a power play goal late in the second frame to tie the contest. Defenseman Corey Hessler blasted a loose puck past Fort Wayne goalie Kevin St. Pierre at 17:05.
Fort Wayne began the third period with another power play but the IceHogs were the ones who capitalized. Off the opening draw in the third, Fort Wayne defenseman Mike Dombkiewicz fell down in his own zone and center Steve Yetman picked up the loose puck. The rookie set up winger Greg Barber who poked his own rebound past St. Pierre just 18 seconds into the final frame for the eventual game winner.
The Hogs and Dickie held the Komets off the board the rest of the way to eliminate them from the postseason. The IceHogs outshot the Komets for the first time in the playoffs, 37-33. Rockford finished the contest 1-for-6 on the power play while the Komets were 1-for-5. Rockford's opponent for the Colonial Cup Semifinals has not been determined yet.
Next Home Game: Because there are two other First Round series still in progress, the IceHogs next opponent and date of next game has not been determined. Tickets can be purchased for the upcoming Colonial Cup Semifinals by calling (815) 968-5222 or by logging on to centreevents.com.
