Rocket Respond to Rumours
January 19, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
P.E.I. Rocket News Release
On behalf of the PEI Rocket, we want to make a public statement that the Savard Family has no plan to relocate the PEI Rocket right now. We are dedicated to staying in Charlottetown.
The stories that have been written are unfortunate and we want our loyal fans to know that we plan to stay. We have a great relationship with the City of Charlottetown and the Civic Centre Board and are working on a new agreement as we speak.
We are aware of the rumours of Lewiston's intention to move to Summerside. If this request is made official by January 31, then it would have to go to the Board of Governors for approval.
It is our very strong opinion that the Prince Edward Island's population base and corporate market is way too small to be able to support two teams. We are certain that a second team in PEI could have disastrous effects for the PEI Rocket. There is no evidence to suggest that two teams could be successful on Prince Edward Island.
Hopefully the Commissioner and the League Board of Governors will make their decision based on the economics involved and will not place an existing franchise in jeopardy.
The Rocket will continue to work closely with our partners at the City of Charlottetown and the Charlottetown Civic Centre. We are the PEI Rocket and this is where we want to be.
Sincerely,
Serge Savard Sr. & Serge Savard Jr.
