P.E.I. Rocket News Release
The PEI Rocket have a busy weekend ahead of them both on and off the ice. Aside from battling for four big points against arch rival Moncton Wildcats, Friday night at 7 o'clock, and the Drummondville Voltigeurs, Sunday at 4 o'clock, the entire organization is busy giving back to the community.
This week's events start tonight (Wednesday) as the players and coaches serve pasta dinner at East Side Mario's, with proceeds from the dinner going towards the fight against breast cancer. Friday night the fight against the devastating disease continues as part of their annual Pink out the Rink Game against the Moncton Wildcats. In honour of those fighting and those who have fought breast cancer, the players will wear pink jerseys which will be given away as part of a raffle after the game with proceeds from the raffle tickets going to the Atlantic Chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The Rocket organization will also be donating a portion of the gate receipts to the cause as well.
PEI Rocket Vice-president Trent Birt says, "As an organization, we understand the importance of competing hard every night to win the battles needed to win hockey games. Although this is very important to us and near and dear to our hearts, we realize it does not compare to what those battling the ugly disease of breast cancer must go through. Everyone directly and indirectly involved with this devastating disease must find energy and courage from within while relying on various resources from others to help them win the most important battle of all; that's living life. We can put systems in place to help us win games on the ice but unfortunately the science of beating cancer isn't where it has to be today. Because of this, we are most proud to be partnering with the Atlantic Chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to raise awareness and money to assist in finding a cure for this disease that effects far too many of us. We encourage everyone to join us for the Think Pink Pasta dinner on October 12 and at our Breast Cancer Pink Jersey game on October 14. Come out and enjoy two great events while making a difference in the lives of many."
The team will also be giving to those that are participating in the various divisions of this weekend's Prince Edward Island Marathon. As a way to say congrats to those that trained hard to show such determination and desire to participate in such an event, the organization has given complimentary tickets to the children who ran the Spud Run and all participants of the full marathon. Entrants in the other categories are being offered discounted prices.
Birt says, "this is a way for us to give back and recognize those making positive healthy choices and making sacrifices for months to do something outstanding. Hard work and determination is something we ask of our players and we appreciate and respect the commitment given by those participating in an event like this. The more this message can be shared with others, the better our community will be."
