New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT- The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, the American Savings Foundation, Coalition for New Britain's Children, New Britain Consolidated School District, New Britain Youth Network and United Way of Central and Northeast Connecticut will host a kick-off celebration tomorrow to ensure that New Britain children continue to learn during the summer and help close the achievement gap in school. The event will take place tomorrow (Friday, June 20 at 2:00 PM) on National Summer Learning Day at New Britain Stadium prior to the Rock Cats game against Reading.

United Way volunteers will engage children in experiential activities and assist families in finding summer learning opportunities. New Britain children will also receive free books and register for the activity of their choice, which they will attend during the Summer Enrichment Experience (S.E.E) in conjunction with the New Britain Consolidated School District. Local community-based organizations will have a table with games, crafts and examples of hands-on learning experiences that students will engage in during the S.E.E. program this summer. At the event, there will also be games, a fun zone, the Rock Cats Mascots, and other activities including watching the Rock Cats batting practice before their 6:35 PM game. All students will be given a voucher for food and families receive tickets to attend the game. This is a celebration for summer learning, community, and collaboration. Families will arrive by 2:00 and the pregame event will take place until 4:30.

Tomorrow's event will raise awareness about the importance of summer learning to help kids stay on track to read on grade level, an indicator of on-time high school graduation and success in life. This is one example of how United Way and its partners are mobilizing people to help children succeed. 30 United Way volunteers will help out at the event. The following workplaces are providing volunteers: Target of New Britain, TD Bank, Trinity College, UPS, University of Hartford and Voya, as well as volunteers from the United Way of New Britain and Berlin Regional Advisory Board. The event's organizing partners include the American Savings Foundation, Coalition for New Britain's Children, New Britain Consolidated School District, New Britain Youth Network and United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. The free books will be distributed to children, thanks to generous contributions directly to United Way Community Investment in support of education programs and initiatives such as this one.
