New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats, Connecticut's oldest continuously- operating professional sports franchise, today announced a further expansion of their Radio Network for the 2009 Season. The Eastern League club is adding two well-regarded community-based AM outlets - WMRD/1150 (Middletown/New Britain) and WLIS /1420 (Old Saybrook) - to a growing network of stations that will transmit the fun and excitement of Rock Cats Baseball in 2009. Earlier this month, the New Britain franchise unveiled a new flagship arrangement with Farmington-based WTIC AM and FM Radio that, in combination with WMRD and WLIS, will air all 142 Rock Cats games next season to every corner of Connecticut.
Rock Cats President and CEO Bill Dowling said, "We are very excited to be joining forces with WMRD/1150-AM and WLIS/1420-AM for the upcoming season. Both are well-established community outlets and their inclusion in our Network allows us to greatly improve service to fans who listen in their coverage areas. WMRD-AM is an important addition for listeners in the central part of the state, while WLIS-AM's powerful signal extends the length of the Shoreline, from New Haven to the Rhode Island border."
Don DeCesare, President and General Manager of both WMRD-AM and WLIS-AM, stated: "We are delighted to bring the Rock Cats play-by-play back to all of Central and Eastern Connecticut. Bill Dowling, his staff, and Jeff Dooley - the voice of the Rock Cats - are great partners for us. Eastern League Baseball is wonderful, affordable family entertainment in any year. But this year, more than ever, we know our listeners will want to follow the Rock Cats, hear the Rock Cats, and attend Rock Cats games. We'll be with them every inning of the way!"
The Rock Cats will open their 2009 Eastern League Season - and thus their 142-game radio broadcast package with WMRD and WLIS - on April 8th when they travel north to play the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, partners of the Toronto Blue Jays. The New Britain club's exciting Regular Season action will continue virtually every day through September 7th when the 'Cats will host the New York Yankees' EL affiliate - the Trenton Thunder - in a season-ending Labor Day Weekend Series at New Britain Stadium.
